Still Life with Compotier
Paul Cezanne
1879-82
Modern art isn’t responsive to traditional art but, rather, is autonomous. It is thoroughly grounded in the subjectivity of the artist. With Modernist autonomous artwork, the authority of nature is broken. The artist is grounded in the present.
The image is flat. There is no change in the plane with the white cloth that, in reality, ought to hang down the table’s edge, but rather is flat and straight. The glass is shown in an abnormal position with the stem not correctly centered. Cezanne takes the spatial form of his design and renders it arbitrary. He subjectively distorts the order of nature. He is changing nature on the basis of subjective intuition. He is rebuilding nature. The objective reality of the world becomes different when made into an image. Looking at Cezanne’s painting, you can see his struggle to find the right way to rearrange nature.
